DOWNLOAD #37 (11.12.2008): Hmm...well,
the truth is the reason so much of the Schuyler sessions were never released is
that the majority of the songs were just too sloppy. Remember, Billy (our
drummer) didn't even know the songs yet and obviously that presented some
challenges that were beyond any drummer. But here are a few more tracks
that are relatively presentable. Also, many of you might not be aware that
there is a crap load of Karl Rove stuff on the internet archive. You can
go here to download

definitely worth it. You're welcome.

I wrote
"She Has The Scars" in my mind back in 2003 while I sat with my mother one
evening as she slept fitfully. I could never write a song that means more
to me than this one and I believe it is one of my best vocal performances
because it was real.

Election Day. I hope you voted. Tonight I've uploaded a song from my
last album, Different, called "You Burn And You Know It". I wrote and
recorded it the day my grandson was born, though there is a nod to my mom in the
lyrics, It's largely a celebration of his birth and the long life ahead of him.

I'll
continue the Karl Rove downloads in the near future. Each day this week,
in honor of my mom, I will be uploading songs I've written in tribute to my
family and friends. Today I've put up a song, which I included on Wasp
51!--an album that consists largely of songs mourning the passing of things
dear to me--I wrote for my mother back in 2003.

DOWNLOAD #32 (10.28.2008):
I
always looked upon the Karl Rove as an opportunity fumbled. The line-up of
Johnny St. Ours, Aaron Farrington, Billy Hunt and me was as creative a group of
people as I ever worked with in any capacity. If we'd decided that we
wanted to take things to a considerably higher level, there's no telling what we
could've done. Billy (our drummer) always said the band was fueled by
ungodly amounts of testosterone and I can't disagree; we were the ultimate male
band, led in no small part by Johnny. I always felt we were sort of a
cross between Neil Young and Husker Du with a touch of the Beatles and the
Pixies thrown in for good measure. If we'd decided to practice two or
three times a week (tough because I lived 55 miles away from the others and
because Johnny and Billy had young families and demanding jobs and because Aaron
was an in-demand photographer) and tried to line up many more shows than we ever
actually played (8-10), there's no telling where we could've taken our music.
As it was, we ended up being a rather sloppy but incredibly energetic, emotional
band that never came close to living up to its potential. More's the
shame. Also a shame is the fact that we never recorded more than we did,
though I do have several of our concerts on tape. The songs here
are rarely heard tracks from the so-called "Schuyler Sessions"...rarely heard
because they're full of screw ups. Still the band's sincerity and belief
in rock and roll as more than just background music does come through.
Ignore the mistakes and enjoy the religious fervor with which we attack each
song. By the way, Billy had just joined the band and didn't really
know our songs, but he did an admirable job the two days we recorded (I'd just
bought a Firepod and a new iMac), keeping up with three rock and roll fuck-ups
on songs he'd never heard before or, at best, had run through once or twice.
(You can read about the whole saga
here,
here and
here.) If folks seem to enjoy these tracks, I'll put up more next week.

DOWNLOAD #31 (10.21.2008): An extra cool set of downloads this week. What we've got here is a nice
little five song set of songs from a practice session some time in the
late winter or early spring of 2002-033 when we were still practicing at Casey's
house(?) in Harrisonburg after he moved out of 102 Maryland Avenue. I discovered the tape from which
these songs are taken this past summer along with a number of other tapes of BOK,
BOP, Plague Dogs, and The Karl Rove. I haven't even listened to all of
them yet, so who knows what interesting stuff I might find whenever I get 'round
to listening to them. This tape is very interesting because there's a lot
of conversation between the band members as we work on new material or plow
through older stuff. The band seem to be in a great mood. It
wouldn't be long, though, before things got worse. Of course, this line-up
parted ways in September of '03. I've included three songs of Jane's
because she's been under represented in the weekly downloads. (That's
mainly because there are few recordings of her where her vocals are even
remotely audible.) She comes through loud and clear here. The
performances are good. Not revelatory but definitely something any BOK fan
is gonna want.
Yeah...I'm gonna ask for donations. This will mean about a gig of
downloads this week and if'n you can click on the "Donate" button above and send
some $$$ this way , I'll show my appreciation by giving your three bonus songs:
"Sweet" and "Then I Kissed Her" (from this date) and "Because Because-->Lost"
(from the WXJM '04 show. I believe I forgot to include "Lost" in the
previous WXJM downloads.) As soon as I receive notification of your

Wow...it's has been a tough couple weeks, huh? Hard times have even
hit my immediate family. So here are a couple freebies again, but no bonus
this time...just a couple free songs for everyone. Anyway, here are a couple tracks from a Book Of
Kills show, April 28, 2001...on the house again. This was not too
long after Bill Bird had joined the band on bass, replacing Lisa Van Fossen.
Randy Simpson had yet to join, so I was handling all the lead guitar, with Jane
Firkin on rhythm guitar and Casey Firkin on drums. The version of "Fat
Woman" here is definitely interesting because it's a composite of two different
recordings...a video tape by Andrew Neckowitz and a mini disc recording that I
made by setting up two mics right on the floor in front of the band.
Unfortunately, the mics were so low that they mainly picked up Bill's (overly
loud) bass to the detriment of the vocals and all the other instruments. That said, it's
still a raging, if (as usual) sloppy version of the song and has never been
released. Also included is "Why Won't You?", another song from that night
and one that I love to play live.
This one's not a composite though. It has seen very limited release as the
backing music for a slide show on the first "BOK Video Bootleg". (By the
way...I'm having a little trouble keeping up with what I've put on this page for
download, so if I'm repeating material, drop me a line and let me know!)

most likely you don't have it. As a bonus for a donation, however, I'll
throw in "Lost", "Because Because" and "I Start To Fall", all from the same
show! When I receive notification of your donation, I'll send you the link

DOWNLOAD #28 (10.05.2008): I have 6-7 songs
from a show BOK played at the Little Grill, October 23, 2004. I will

I must unfortunately cut back on the number of free songs I'm releasing each

week's download is part two of the 11.18.2004 WXJM broadcast. Next week
I'll post some of the live performances from this band. The week after
that, I am thinking about uploading a few performances from some of the practice
tapes I made of this particular band IF I can find enough taped performances.

DOWNLOAD #26 (9.23.2008): This
week I've uploaded a number of performances from the 11.18.2004 WXJM broadcast.
Two or three of these songs have already been made available on this page.
Anyway, I will put up a good many tracks both this and next week featuring stuff
from that show, as well as the live performance at the Little Grill on
10.23.2004. Most, maybe all, of these songs have seen light of day at some
time or another, but they've still been heard only by a handful of people.
They feature three incomparable musicians: Dustin Bugg on drums, Brian
Temples on bass and Mike Chiarello on lead guitar. Yet another FREE download from Bookofkills.com! Thanks for listening and
for visiting this website. I hope you will tell others about Book of Kills
and this site! Thank you for doing so!

DOWNLOAD #25 (9.18.2008): Woah! Eleven days since the last weekly download! Well...let's give everyone three more FREE tracks...what say you? These are audio captures from the long out of print dvd, BOOK OF KILLS LIVE! VIDEO BOOTLEG, VOLUME 1. This dvd was compiled from two different shows, both filmed by Andrew Neckowitz, on 12.09.2000 and 4.28.2001. Both shows took place at the Little Grill in Harrisonburg. The songs that make up this download come from the 2000 gig. I might or might not upload a couple of tracks from the 2001 show in the future. Sound's pretty lo-fi, but if you're an ardent BOK historian (ha!) and don't have the dvd, you'll find these of interest, in particular Jane Firkin's "So Wicked" (which features Gary Bugg on banjo) and "I Hang Heavy-->Down In Flames-->Can't Stand It" which may well be the longest, jammin'-est version of all time (the song stretches to about 10 minutes!) It's quite similar to another live cut of "The Medley" that I uploaded on this very page not too long ago. Jane's noise freak-out is better here, though, and my long solo is better too, I think. Lisa Van Fossen handles bass chores (she was so very good...I still miss working with her to this day) and Casey Firkin mans the drums (no mean feat in Book Of Kills, believe me.) I promise not to upload anymore versions of "The Medley" for a while. Don't even know if I have anymore. But you have to understand, if you weren't there to experience BOK from 2000-2003 that that piece (which would start either with "Why Won't You?" or "I Hang Heavy") was to us what "Dark Star" was to the Grateful Dead or "Satisfaction" was to the Stones. It always brought the house down. Sadly, you can't really capture the excitement of the live experience by listening to these tracks but you can get a bit of a feel for it, I suppose.
Next week's download will be some live over-the-air cuts from 2004 featuring
Dustin Bugg, Brian Temples and Mike Chiarello. Stay tuned! Click on
the song titles below to listen to or download the songs. Click on

DOWNLOAD #24 (9.07.2008):
Here are
a couple more free live cuts from the January 25, 2002 Book Of Kills
concert..."Sweet" and "The Medley", both tracks of which feature songs that were
wildly popular. See Download #21 for more information. Again, keep
in mind that the tape from which I took these songs was in pretty bad shape so
the sound is not very good. The performances are a bit on the shaky side
as well, but there is a definite spark in the air and you can hear how much the
audience was into the band. Back in 2001-2003, BOK had quite a fervent
following. Anyway, click on the links below to listen to or download
the tracks. As a special thank you to those of you who've supported

DOWNLOAD #23 (9.3.2008): Another FREE
download (unless, of course...you know...you wanna do the donation thing by
clicking on the button above) this week! And another previously unheard
track (sort of.) The
feature song is
a home recorded track of the old Book Of Kills song, "Bucketful Of Sickness", by
The Karl Rove from the "Schuyler Sessions back in the summer of 2006.
Although that track was released in October of '06, some time later I added some
overdubs to the song making it a substantially fuller recording. I think I
intended to put it on the box set and lost it, though I don't really remember
exactly. Anyway, this version has never been heard by anyone and it's
actually a better version of the song than
the one we did
later at the Monkeyclaus Studios which I've also included here. The
third song is a live
Karl Rove thing from July 8, 2006 at the Atomic Burrito in Charlottesville, VA
featuring Johnny St. Ours on lead guitar and vocals, Aaron Farrington on bass
and vocals, Billy Hunt on drums and me on guitar and vocals...of course, the
same personnel plays on the other two songs as well.

DOWNLOAD #22 (8.31.2008): A
special Labor Day indeed. Here's the promised second outtake ("3 Lunes")
from the This Is Your Book Of Kills sessions! This one was largely
composed of samples I created or found and edited. I like this one a lot
but, as I noted earlier, it doesn't quite fit in with the sound and feel of the
other songs that I've thus far recorded. So here it is for you to download
and (I hope) enjoy!

DOWNLOAD #21 (8.28.2008): This week's
download is another FREE one, unless you enjoy this web page and all the free
stuff you get and would like to make a donation by clicking on the "Donate"
button above! Anyway...what we've got here is a previously unreleased live
cut from January 25, 2002. "Abandoned" to be specific. Now, a few
things first before you go downloading the mp3: This is a monaural
recording from a battered VHS tape with A LOT of drop outs and virtually no
dynamic range. I have worked with it fairly extensively trying to expand
the frequency range and give it a bit more power and depth. Secondly, that
night Book Of Kills (Casey Firkin - drums & vocals, Jane Firkin - guitar &
vocals, Randy Simpson - guitar & vocals, Bill Bird - bass & vocals and me -
guitar & vocals) was plagued with some pretty persistent feedback in the sound
system. So keep the limitations of the source in mind. That said,
this was a really fun evening with a big (the Little Grill was packed),
enthusiastic crowd. We were our usual sloppy selves, but everyone,
including us, seemed to be having fun and like I said, this is a rare track.
If the response to the track is good, I'll put some more up in the weeks to
come.

You liked that one? Okay! Here's
another track from the show..."If You Want It
Take It!"
Here's a
third live track...Spinal Tap's "Gimme Some

DOWNLOAD #20 (8.22.2008): Wow! We're
already at the twentieth download! Well, I suppose this one's sort of
special. It's just a one song deal this time, but I do need to cut back on
the bandwidth usage anyway, to be frank. This download is a very recent
outtake from the This Is Your Book Of Kills sessions, "Shake My Tree". In fact, I just
finished the track August 21. I'll be honest...the thing is actually about
89.5% done. I just got to the point with it where I was spending way
too much time trying to get it to what I could hear in my head and it wasn't
making it for me. More importantly, it didn't quite seem to fit in with
the other songs that I knew for sure were going to be part of the next album
(whenever that comes out!) That's not to say I don't think this isn't a
good song and worth 99 cents, 'cause I actually think it's pretty decent.
The lyrics, by the way, are largely taken from various very old traditional folk
songs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I did a little bit of
pruning and selecting and rewriting. You can listen to a very low fidelity mp3 of it by clicking on the link below
and decide for yourself whether you like what your hear or not. I doubt
this one will be released in any other form in the near future, if ever.
If you decide you'd like a high quality mp3 of the song, click on the "Buy Now"
button below and I will send you a link were you can download the song. (I
am, by the way, now using variable speed encoding on my mp3's which makes for
the best combination of a quality listen and quick download time.)

DOWNLOAD #18 (8.08.2008): Triple 8
day! A very lucky day according to tradition. If you're a hard core BOK fam and can listen to just about any damned thing I post and love it, then
you'll find these free downloads quite the cat's meow! I found a scratched
up cd with a recording of a very early BOK practice session featuring Casey
Firkin on drums and backing vocals, Jane Firkin on guitar and backing
vocals (although her guitar is nearly inaudible through out) and Lisa Van Fossen
on bass. This was recorded on the old black boom box that has captured so
many shows and practice sessions over the years. Thanks, Mom, for a great
gift! This is a recording of the infamous "Medley"...in this case
consisting of "I Hang
Heavy-->Up In Smoke-->Can't Stand It Anymore". It's a very large
download since the song is almost 9 minutes long!
Also this included this week is a (rather poorly mixed) recording of "Fa
Fa Fa", an outtake from this summer's This Is Your Book Of Kills sessions.
This song was recorded using Garageband. As detailed in the past on this
web site, I ended up losing the track before I could finish the recording and
give it a good mix. However, I did make a guide recording so that I could
listen to it and decide what else it needed and how best to give it a final mix,
before I lost the track forever. This is NOT what I ended the song to
sound like, but it's an interesting, if minor, piece of BOK history now.
The "drums" by the way are just me pounding on two boxes.

DOWNLOAD #13 (06.27.2008): A bit of a
left-field one this week featuring three versions of the 2002 track, "The
Antiman Song": The original All About You track, a live version from
Rockin' The Cheetah's Ass, and a version from the final BOK studio sessions.
I wrote this one with Book Of Kills in mind (that is, the band consisting of

one of my favorites of my own compositions but a song that no one who has
ever listened to my music has mentioned as a favorite of theirs..."No Time For
Love". This download offers a brief demo of the song from 1982, the
original full recording from 1983's 12 Songs, the re-recording from 1990's
For The Good Of The Cause, and the second re-recording from 2006's
Adventures Of An Inspired Amateur. All for a silly 99 cents!

DOWNLOAD #9 (05.23.2008): The ninth
download offered exclusively through bookofkills.com features another classic
BOK song..."Stanley The Steamer" from 1997's So Far In Every Direction.
You also get two live recordings of "Stanley", one from 2003 and the second from
2004. Due to the fact that these are fairly long songs, the downloads are
encoded at the standard 192 kps. However, if you'd like to download an
even higher quality mp3, just let me know.

DOWNLOAD #7 (05.10.2008): The seventh
download offered through bookofkills.com features what is certainly one of the
more popular songs I ever recorded - "See You Again" from 2002's All About
You album - as well as the original version of the song from 1999's
Welcome To Concrete E.P. Included also is the previously unreleased
original boom box demo from 1999.

mp3's. After I get notification of your payment, I will email you a web
address from which you can download these songs.

DOWNLOAD #6 (05.02.2008): I have posted "River Of Blood" from the recent Plague Dogs recording sessions at George's practice space in Harrisonburg. This is not a final mix, but I really wanted to get something uploaded from those sessions since I've had some folks wondering when they'd see the light of day. I've also included the original Karl Rove version of the song as well as a live recording (also by the 'Rove) of the first time we ever played the song in public. This week's downloads are completely free! I hope you enjoy them!
Click here to get these FREE downloads.
DOWNLOAD #5 (04.25.2008): The
fifth download offered exclusively through bookofkills.com features the entire
1998 e.p., If I Should Fall, certainly one of the more popular BOK records.
You get "If I Should Fall", "Lost Puppy Flyer", "Temporal Adventures In Dust",
"Airplane Impressions",
"Any Other Way", "Caroline",
"Realistic Mind",
"Free Assembly",
"the laugh loop", and the never released outtake (of sorts), "Go Back Get Back"
all for just $6...only $5 if you already ordered "Caroline" from the first week
of the weekly download series! In his review for DemoUniverse (one of only two places I ever bothered
to send it for review because I really didn't think much of it at the time), Jim
Santo wrote "...If
I Should Fall presents the BOK aesthetic -- a masterful merger of beauty and
pain, in perfect pop songs with lyrics as hard and bright as diamonds -- in one
convenient, easy-to-digest digital pill." This album, by the way, was
the very first Book Of Kills compact disc. If I Should Fall appeared in
three versions. The first contained only the first nine songs. The
second contained the first nine songs plus the "hidden" laugh track. The
third contained, in addition to the laugh track, a cover of The Ramones' "I
Wanna Be Your Boyfriend".

DOWNLOAD #4 (04.19.2008):
The fourth download offered exclusively through bookofkills.com
features various permutations of the 2001 song, "To Dream A New Dream". "Dream" first appeared on
the 2001 album, Hoggett Heads featuring Casey and Jane Firkin, Bird Bird
and Randy Simpson. This time you get FOUR different tracks for the price
of one...just 99 cents. The rarest cut is the never before released demo
that I made for Casey and Jane in early 2001.
It's not in the greatest shape, but is pretty interesting in that it features
some different lyrics. Also featured: the original track from
Hoggett Heads, an alternate, rather stripped
down cut of the same basic performance, and a 2004
live broadcast on the James Madison University radio station, WXJM, featuring
Dustin Bugg on drums and backing vocals, Brian Temples on bass and Mike Chiarello
on lead guitar. Downloads are high quality 256 kps
mp3's. After I get notification of your payment, I will email you a web
address from which you can download these songs.

DOWNLOAD #3 (04/10/2008): The third
download offered exclusively through bookofkills.com is a bit of a left-field
one. "That's The Life For Me" first appeared on 1999's compact disc
re-release of the 1992 album, The Haunted Life. Yeah...the vocals
are kinda out of tune and the guitars are too and everything's a tad sloppy and
the words are sorta goofy, but for gosh sakes...it is an outtake.
But it's one of my favorite outtakes. Little story...a young friend of
mine told me a few years ago that he'd been having a tough old time of it right
before The Haunted Life cd came out. He told me he played "That's
The Life For Me" every night that summer and it was one of the few things that
pulled him through his rough patch. "That song saved my life," he said.
That was the best compliment I've ever received as far as my music goes.
Anyhow, this week for a paltry 99 cents you get four downloads...the newly
discovered and previously unreleased original demo of the song PLUS the newly
discovered and previously unreleased second recording PLUS the original mix from
1999 (still the best version) PLUS the 2007 remastered/remixed version from the
digitally remastered The Haunted Life released on the Internet Archives.

World" PLUS the previously unheard "Simple World" remake from 2002. This
track (not a basic demo but rather a finished recording) was originally slated
to be part of All About You but I dropped it at the last minute.
This is a must have! For a measly 99 cents you get the original
version from 1991's For The Good Of The Cause AND the 2002 track!
Downloads are high quality 224 kps
mp3's or, if you're into CD quality sound, let me know and you can download flac
files of each song. (If you don't know what a flac file is, it's probably
best you stick with mp3's.) After I get notification of your payment, I will email you a web
address from which you can download these two tracks.

the "band" version from the e.p. EP featuring Casey and Jane Firkin and
Lisa Van Fossen PLUS the remixed and remastered version originally intended for
the box set, Adventures of an Inspired Amateur PLUS the live-in-concert
