Links
Here you will find mainly links related to DIY (do it yourself) and home made music resources or artists. A few personal favorites that you should check out if you love music have been included as well. Please report broken links!
LOCAL BANDS, FRIENDS, ETC.
BRIAN BURACKER:
Former bassist extraordinaire (1997-98) for Book Of Kills.
BUCK GOOTER: Harrisonburg,
Virginia's Terry Turtle and Billy Brat create musical uniqueness. I
recently got the opportunity to record their third album. Awesome.
DAVE BRANDT: Took
some of the first-ever photos of Book Of Kills. A very talented artist of
many talents.
DAVE BURACKER:
Former guitarist (1997-98) for Book Of Kills.
DUSTIN BUGG:
Former drummer (1994-95 and 2004) for Book Of Kills. Exceptionally
talented in so many musical ways.
FURS: I don't know these guys from Luray, Virginia, very well, but they make superb (and eccentric...the best kind of...) rock and roll.
HOMETOWN MUSIC.NET: Local music
store that also provides a web site for musicians.
JASON HEAVENER:
Former bassist (2000) for Book Of Kills.
MEGAN HUDDLESTON:
So talented. Aaron Farrington, Megan and I almost formed a band once. It
would've probably ruled the world.
MIKE CHIARELLO:
Brilliant former guitarist for Book Of Kills (2004).
PANTHER BURN: No, not
that Pantherburn. This is Charlottesville's Pantherburn (or
is it Panther Burn?) featuring Aaron Farrington, formerly of The Karl Rove and
The Proles, and the inimitable Phillip St. Ours...brother, of course, to the
wondrous Johnny and Robert. All three of those St. Ours guys are
exceptional musicians/songwriters.
PLAGUE DOGS: They're
not actively playing shows right now, but as of January '09 they are involved in
a gigantic project where they're re-recording just about everything the Plague
Dogs ever performed, including a couple Book Of Kills songs.
ROB CHRISTENSEN: A
really good homemade musician with whom I have forged a close friendship
over the past 6-7 years. I think we share very similar music
sensibilities.
ROBERT ST. OURS:
The very talented elder brother.
STRAIGHT PUNCH TO THE CROTCH: This is former The Karl Rove drummer, Billy Hunt's band.
SLEEPFEEDER: Casey Firkin's new band. They make beautiful music.
INFLUENCES
JOHN LENNON SITES: There are, of course, many web pages dedicated to John. I like bagism.com.
THE BEATLES: Yeah...I do kinda like this band. Let's face it...there are many dozens of interesting sites about them. Just do a yahoo or google search and you'll find something interesting and entertaining. You can check out Beatles.com, too, of course. The greatest rock band of all time. Always has been. Always will be. That's a bit sad in a way, isn't it? But not really.
BOB DYLAN SITES: I was showing someone the old BOK home page and she said, "How come there's no Bob Dylan links? I thought you liked him?" LIKE HIM? Kee-rist! Bobdylan.com is really nice. Expecting Rain, however, is mind-boggling in the amount of information you can find on the master.
THE RAMONES OFFICIAL SITE: Can't deny the influence the Ramones had on BOK's music. But then, what so-called alternative rocker playing today hasn't somehow been influenced by the Ramones?
THE PIXIES: There are a few decent Pixies sites on the web but none that I think do this great band justice. But this is a good one for finding various Pixies-related links around the web. The Pixies have their own web page that keeps you abreast of any upcoming tours or releases.
SYD BARRETT.NET: The Syd Barrett Page: There are several very nice pages dedicated to the late, great Syd. Why do so many thousands of people still find Syd Barrett so intriguing even though he hasn't released any new material in some 30 years? I don't know, but this site is a good place to search for the answer!
MEXICAN SEAFOOD: It used to be the best Nirvana page, but it's not quite as good as it once was since Layla gave it up, but it's still a must-see for Nirvana fans.
THE OFFICIAL GUIDED BY VOICES PAGE: Probably my favorite band since '94. Robert Pollard is truly a genius and I don't use that word very often. This site is now inactive but contains an incredible wealth of information.
THE SEX PISTOLS: Like I really need to say anything about them.
HUSKER DU: Husker Du had a huge influence on early BOK music. They were a band of awesome power.
A PATTI SMITH BABELOGUE: If you know much about BOK, then you know that Patti Smith had a profound impact on Jim's music. Check her out today.
THE VELVET UNDERGROUND: The only band that could seriously challenge the Beatles as the greatest pop group of all time. This is not nearly as good as the previous site I had up here, but it's the best VU page of what's currently available and that's not saying much.
BRIAN WILSON: Probably America's greatest pop composer. It's a shame so many young music fans today don't really appreciate his greatness. This is a fairly good (official) site. You can do a search and find other interesting places to go to find out more about this great musician.
HYPERRUST: An incredibly packed web page featuring absolutely everything you could ever possibly want to know about Neil Young. This is one of the earliest and still one of the best music pages on the web. Neil is certainly a big influence on the music of Book of Kills (just listen to "I Fell Inside") and one of the godfathers of punk and lo-fi music. Check it out.
THE PRETENDERS ARCHIVE: An early inspiration when Jim began recording his music in the 80s.
AND OTHER STUFF...
TECHNICOLOR WEB OF SOUND: Nice psych/garage/protopunk online station
BEYOND THE BEAT GENERATION: Really cool psych/garage station that focuses on stuff from '64-'68
LITTLE STEVEN'S UNDERGROUND GARAGE: (Yes...this is Bruce Springsteen's guitarist. Turns out he's a huge garage/psych/punk fan. This is a really good site too.) He also created a channel for Sirius Radio that I think makes for the most exciting radio on...uh...radio.
More online stations featuring classic and contemporary psych/garage/punk:
